Location
The Wellness Center will be located adjacent to the innovative Therapy Pool which is heated to 91 degrees and is open
daily providing healing warm water exercise. The buoyancy of water makes it possible for those with special needs to
do many exercises that could not be done on land and the warmth of the water relaxes patrons and increases blood
circulation. The RBAC provides scholarships so that no one is denied opportunity because of economic disadvantage.
Plans
The Wellness Center will have an unobstructed view of the Therapy Pool from the south side and will have easy deck
access for patrons. The facility will include family changing rooms and locker rooms and features throughout to
assist those with impaired mobility, i.e., those using wheelchairs, walkers and canes. Plans include a multi-purpose
room for land-based exercise consultations and assessments in keeping with HIPAA requirements, and educational
programs co-sponsored by other non-profit agencies including the Arthritis Foundation, American Diabetes Association
and the Autism Alliance. There will be offices for the Aquatics Director and therapists and a first aid room.
Importance
Every effort to support regular exercise programs for those with special needs has the potential of contributing to good
health. Research shows that regular exercise on even a moderate-intensity level may help prevent as well as mitigate
the symptoms of many diseases. Exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of dying of coronary heart disease and decrease
the risk for stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. It also helps to control weight, contributes
to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among older adults; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis, reduces
symptoms of anxiety and depression, and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications.
