Rose Bowl 4th at Summer Jr Olympics

July 30-August 3, Mission Viejo - Rose Bowl placed 4th (ahead of over 50 teams) at the Southern California Junior Olympics.  results

11-12 Girls made it a clean sweep, breaking all four Team Relay Records!  Matt Varraveto breaks 10 and under 100 and 200 Free team records!

Rose Bowl Record Setters

Eight year-olds Taylor Hughes & Caitlin Smith together established five new 8 & under team records during this summer long course season!  Taylor's 1:47.34 100 Breastroke erased the previous standard of 1:47.46, set a full decade ago (before Taylor was even born)

Caitlin continues to rewrite the 8 & under girls' record book, recently wiping out two 11 year-old records; the 100 Backstroke by four seconds (1:31.54) & 200 IM (3:17.08) by over 11 seconds!  She's also bettered her own 2007 Butterfly records with a 39.73 in the 50 & 1:28.24 in the 100.  Congratulations Caitlin & Taylor!

Hayley McGregory Sets World Record!

Hayley McGregory, who recently trained with the Rose Bowl National group in October & November while taking classes at USC, set a WORLD RECORD in the 50 backstroke! ROSE BOWL sends a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Hayley!

 

Four Rose Bowl Scholastic All-Americans

 National Group swimmers Katherine Tse, Brooke Bennett, Chris Luu & Chris Myers were named to the 2006-2007 USA Swimming Scholastic All American Team.  Congratulations for achieving excellence in both school & in the pool!

 

Seven at Jr. Nationals

March 18-22, Orlando, Florida

Seven swimmers represented Rose Bowl at the Spring Junior Nationals in Orlando, Florida.  Great job Emily Adamczyk, Scott Farley, Kenzie Heaton, Rachel Krager, Andrew Muller, Kevin Tovar & Katherine Tse!

Highlights from the meet:

Scott Farley had a fantastic meet, breaking 13-14 team records in the 200, 500 & 1000 yard freestyle events, as well as the 1500 meter freestyle.  Andrew Muller finished 19th in the 200 Fly & set new "Open" team records in the 100 & 200 yard Fly & 200 meter Fly.  On the girls' side Emily Adamczyk finished 21st in the 200 Breastroke.  Congratulations to all for representing

Rose Bowl Aquatics on the National stage.

 

Spring Sectionals 

Jason Lezak dominated the sprint Freestyle events with wins in the 50 & 100.   Kenzie Heaton surprised many, including herself by improving a full second on the 50 Free, qualifying for her first Junior National Championships!  Scott Farley, 14, set new team records in the 200, 400 & 800 Freestyles.  Two more records were set by relays; 15-18 Girls 400 Medley (Berklie Oscarson,

Emily Adamczyk, Rachael Krager, Katherine Tse) & the Open Boys 400 Medley (Alex Campbell, Chris Luu, Andrew Muller, Jason Lezak).  Results

 

 

Rose Bowl Runs Away With Pacific Championship

February 22-24, Pasadena - Almost 200 Rose Bowl swimmers easily captured the TEAM title at the Pacific Committee Spring Championships.  Highlights started with five new team records and many swimmers posted their first-ever Jr. Olympic and/or Invitational times.  Megan Baxter's 100 Freestyle became her first-ever 10&un Summer Jr. Olympic event, & Tyler Halley & Alexa Bohorquez both achieved their first-ever June Invitational time-standard, while just off the JO time, in the 11-12 50 Backstroke. 

FIVE TEAM RECORDS!

Caitlin Smith continues to bring down the 8&un girls butterfly TEAM records, as she reset her own records with a 35.78 in the 50 Fly & 16.76 in the 25 Fly.  She also added the 25 Backstroke to her list of TEAM records with an 18.08!   Matt Olson, in his last short course meet as a 10 year-old, established a new 100 Butterfly TEAM Record.  Then, Scott Farley "smashed" the 13-14 Boys' 200 Freestyle record by .01!

Rose Bowl 9th at So Cal Jr Olympic Championships!

OLDER JO's - 13-14 & 15-18 age-groups

February 7-10, Long Beach - 36 Rose Bowl swimmers earned a sixth place TEAM finish at the Older Jr. Olympic Championships.  Their effort, combined with the Younger's (ages 11-12, 10 & un) 16th place finish a week earlier put the Rose Bowl Jr. Olympic TEAM in 9th.  Our goal was to finish  in the top eight, & ended up just a few points short. 

A few highlights among our 73 life-time best performances:  Ray Chao placed 8th in the 100 & 9th in the 200 Breastroke races.  Clark Fisher did a great job getting into the meet & provided valuable racing on relays, dropping 14 seconds in his Mile, & edging even closer to that Sectionals time!  Daniel Adamczyk, Joe Costa & Mickey Guevara all achieved 100% best times (results)

YOUNGER JO's - 10 & un, 11-12 age-groups

February 1-3, Long Beach - Twenty Rose Bowl swimmers earned a 16th place TEAM finish at the Younger (10&un, 11-12) Junior Olympic Championships, which included top swimmers from teams throughout southern California. 

Our goal was to finish in the top eight as a TEAM and we seemed to be definite contenders up until a week before the meet.... 

Unfortunately the flu seemed to be our greatest foe this year, hitting the majority of the JO TEAM just a few days before the start of the meet.  (results)

Nevertheless, we had somr very exciting HIGHLIGHTS: 

Matt Varraveto was our high-point scorer, qualifying for the consolation finals in all six of his events!  Racing in the top-eight finals was Katie Altman & Daniel Chao; both in the 10 & un 100 Breastroke. 

Other swimmers who qualified for the evening consolation finals included:  Kris Abramyan, 10 (50 Back), Iva Icheva, 12 (50 Back &

50 Fly), Corey John, 12 (50 Back), Trenton Julian, 9 (100 Fly)Dennis Lee, 12 (100 Fly) & Matt Olson, 10 (100 Fly).

 

 

Long Beach Grand Prix - 11th Place Finish

January 19-20, Westwood (results) - In a meet that saw a new American record set the very first night of competition, Rose Bowl swimmers joined in with some great swims.  Thirty lifetime bests were posted throughout the weekend, with 100% best times turned in by Alex Campbell & Chris Myers.

Additionally, three Rose Bowl relay records were established: 

15-16 Girl's 400 Free Relay (Emily Adamczyk, Katalina Sher, Kenzie Heaton, Katherine Tse), Men's 400 Free Relay (James Gillette, Andrew Muller, Alex Campbell, Jason Lezak)  & Men's 400 Medley Relay (Kevin Tovar, Chris Luu, Andrew Muller, Jason Lezak)

Congratulations to Haley Shewfelt, 11, & Uma Gyene, 9, for their breakthrough swims!  Uma dropped seven seconds in the 100 Backstroke for her first Summer Jr. Olympic event.  Then Haley picked up her second June Invitational event in

just two weeks with an eight-second improvement in the 100 Butterfly.

January Intrasquad  Sunday, Jan. 13, Rose Bowl - (results

The meet came to a halt just before the third heat of event #17... Olympic Champion, American Record Holder & Rose Bowl swimmer Jason Lezak was to step up for the 50 yard Freestyle, an event in which he's a three-time U.S. National Champion.  All eyes were on lane four, waiting to see a performance from one of the best in the world!  At the sound of the start Jason powered off the blocks, completing the two-lap race in a seemingly effortless 20.20 seconds.

Eight swimmers already on the Spring JO team qualified for additional events on Sunday morning...
